Soundproofing a theater space is essential to my project
since the two theaters are next to each other as well as the fact that the
theaters are next to interactive (noisy) spaces. Creating acoustic spaces for
noise absorption and sound dispersion is necessary. However, instead of just
making bland flat panels, I decided to make the walls and the ceilings of the
theaters follow the geometry of my custom concrete case façade. This was a
major theme in my project since the façade on the on concrete structure (see
elevations) aided the theme of illusion and created surreal moments through the
light entry into my tubes. Since the openings were a “subtractive” quality of
my façade, I decided that an additive quality in my theaters would be a good
contrast. Instead of creating “tiles” I thought it would be creative to make
the shapes (see the axo) in pieces from concrete to follow the theme of
concrete in my building; also since it’s a smoother material, the louder the
echo will be (https://www.ehow.com/info_8788972_types-materials-create-echoes.html).
For the wall holding the concrete extrusions, using cloth wrapped compressed
fiberglass acoustic panels (see http://www.controlnoise.com/soundproof-fabric-panels/)
would absorb the sound from escaping to the theater next door.
