My theater tile would be place on the ceiling right above each and every seat. I see this being used more in the larger theater than the smaller theater because the smaller theater is more for lectures or other events of that nature while the larger theater would be used for the more normal movie theater activities. The idea behind it is that every person gets their own personal sound. So why do this instead of just giving everyone a set of noise canceling headphones so that they can listen to the movie at their own volume? Well for one the theater isn't a place where you go to isolate yourself from others, it's to interact with those around you. And secondly, I thought it would be a cool idea if there were highly specific speakers set into these cylinder extrusions that would point to people in the seats (so that they could increase an aspect of the sound the like be it the dialogue, the background music, the explosions, etc) that would work together with a traditional movie speaker system (which would provide a baseline sound that everyone needs in the theater). So after the movie, you can talk about the movie that everyone knows (the plot, the actors, and all that jazz), but then you can also talk about your experience that was specific to you. That extra personal aspect of the tile could invoke a deeper level of conversation.
In terms of material, I was think one of two options. The first would be concrete, mainly because the that was the main component that the theater was made out of. A problem with that would be that it would get really heavy really fast, so it would either have to be scaled down or really sparingly used. The other option was some sort of metal (steel or aluminum perhaps). The only problem I have with that would be that it might mess with the acoustics of the theater as a whole (there might be distortion or some other factor that comes into play with the introduction of a foreign material).
