Acoustic Wind Pavilion
Designer: Luke Jerram
The Acoustic Wind Pavilion is basically a gigantic Aeolian Harp. It takes all of the winds that are around it and creates sounds that are amplified and projected without any other aids. Why is it like a harp rather than some kind of wind instrument? Well if you look closely there are strings attached to coverings on the tubes. The vibrations that are caused are what creates the sound.

Ana Mernik Looking Out Week 15
Tunable Sound Cloud is a really cool project by Fishtnk - it's a responsive installation that allows for real-time modification and recording of sound quality. The object is made of a sound absorption layer, an acoustic chamber, and a sound reflective surface. The first two layers were made in Rhino with the help of none other but Grasshopper, and the last layer is controlled with MAX/Msp. The two softwares come together through Arduino. The surfaces of the object adjust for sound reflection and absorption according to the needs of the user in a space, "muscle wires" running across the surfaces respond to live input from an outside microphone, and the modules themselves can be changed in geometry - moved, angled, or opened - to enhance sound performance in a space.

Carter Nelson: Looking Out Week 14
I remember referencing this project last year for the desk organizer project where we were asked to combine aluminum and wood in interesting ways. This sort of process was not available nor would it fit the program but the contrast and honesty of the material use in this project and the interesting methods used to create these pieces of furniture culminate in a beautiful artistic piece. Inside a mold is poured molten aluminum and then wooden trunks are pressed into the molten iron to form the top of the table. The outcome is a sharp juxtaposition or material separated by a charred wood layer that shows of the methods used in creating these pieces of furniture.

Alyssa Hamilton: Looking Out Week 12
Hans Scharoun's Berlin Philharmonie is one of the most renowned acoustical spaces. The roof deserve allows for sound to reach the farthest corners without causing an echo. All the service spaces are below the main orchestra space. The tiered seating is all about gathering around the single point of sound within one community-based space. This concept was my inspiration for my Boston Cinema.

It is interesting how wood is automatically associated with nature and the outdoors. Famous stores like REI use wood feature as a way to advertise their stores. An example is one store here in Pittsbutgh.
