SOM’s Cathedral of Christ the Light is a stunning piece of
architecture. It makes beautiful use of glass, fly ash concrete, and
fsc-certified wood. One of the most incredible features is its use of natural
light. The lead architect was Craig Hartman and he said that the main focus for
the design was its use of daylighting. He wanted a more modern structure that
embodied the community so they placed the altar in the ceter surrounded by
seating. The skylight focuses light onto the center altar and allows views of
the sky. The woodwork provides warmth to the building. The Diocese asked that
the Cathedral be built to stand the test of time for at least 300 years, so it
is also fitted to withstand a significant earthquake.
