Project: Sup-Plywood, Nordic Cool
Architect: Snohetta
Location: John F Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Washington, D.C.
This installation demonstrates the unique bending properties of plywood. Many contemporary plywood projects, such as OneMain Street by dECOi Architects feature elegant organic forms consisting of digitally fabricated contours. Some believe that such use of wood disregards the natural properties of the material; any sheet material could be used to produce the same form.
Snohetta's installation at the John F. Kennedy Center for Performing Arts seeks to celebrate plywood as a material. The entire installation consists of 40 sheets of 3mm-thick veneer sewn with ropes to create a continuous ribbon.
