Crawford Notch is a place for people in pursuit of nature. Landmarks there exist out of the perception that the beauty they have remains independent of the influence of human endeavors, that despite the invasion of the highway and railroad upon the region, they remain untouched, merely observed. Much of this, of course, can be said to be a construction; trails are no more natural than the presence of a lodge, and the trees of the region are new growth following heavy logging a century ago. Yet in the construction of anything in the region, the idea of attempting to appeal to visitors through cleverness or technological capability rings false.
