The Crawford Notch and Saco Lake areas are inhabited by two groups of people. There is a historical railway that connects the Crawford Notch and Boston, MA and caters to people from the city who wish to spend a weekend or a a day in recreation, rest, and relaxation as a sort of retreat to the fast paced lifestyle of the city. Those patrons expect to stay in this sort of environment:

The other group of people who are patrons of the Crawford Notch and Saco Lake areas are those that are hiking along the trail and are finishing their multi-month journey. These people have relinquished the creature comforts they would otherwise be used to. The lodge and comfortable spaces like it could either be an uncomfortable contrast to spaces such as this...

...or it could serve as a relief to those sorts of conditions. In the new lodge portion of the assignment we will have to find a sort of balance for the patrons and the sort of experiences they are expecting or would enjoy as being appropriate to the condition towards which they have an affinity for. The architecture must provide all the creature comforts one would expect in a bath and lodging unit but be simple, rustic, and appropriate to the sort of shelters and processes a hiker is used to. This implies a difference in both aesthetic and functional realization in the lodge and in the bath.
