Crawford Notch is part of the White Mountains of New
Hampshire around Saco River and Saco Lake. It is on Route 302 and was found by
Timothy Nash in 1771. It has a picturesque landscape with the trees, mountains,
and lake, showing the true nature of America’s northeast forests. An
interesting fact is that it contains the grave of Samuel Bemis,
the first photographer of the American landscape.
There is also a Crawford Notch Train station right in front
of the Highland Center Lodge. Notable trail names that are close to the lodge
are the Jackson Webster Trail, the Appalachian Trail, and Elephant Head Trail.
In terms of the Highland Center Lodge, I decided to read
some reviews to give me a better understanding of the culture (take from trip
advisor).
“The Highland Center is a great place to stay for families,
friends, seniors. The accommodations are comfortable and clean, and furnished
with sheets, quilts, and furniture from L.L. Bean. Private baths or bunk rooms
with shared bath are available. Meals are served family style, increasing the
fun. There are activities for children, walks and talks with rangers during the
season...”
“ideal for serious hikers and novices too”
In terms of hiking, I have gone to few places including
places in the Smokey Mountains, Big Bend in Texas, the Grand Canyon, Yosemite, and
a place called Bush Betta in south India. They were long treks but not intense
ones so I wasn’t truly geared up or anything. Yet, from what I experienced, I was
submerged into the wildlife away from city noises and it was truly a great experience
especially since it was with friends and family, which made it even more
enjoyable and entertaining.
Because Crawford Notch is a place of beauty and serenity,
and true hikers come and enjoy the nature, I hope that I can design the bathhouse
accordingly in a more naturalistic way that isn’t too “out-there,” keeping the
simplicity of the area.
