Danielle Lehmann: Looking Out Week 11

We've learned from research that wood is a good sound absorber and diffuser and thus, improves sound clarity and quality. Ulga Oreshyna uses recycled wood or leftover wood to create sound diffuser panels. She looks at acoustics as a problem to solve with art and the nature that's around us. She creates these large panels with a 2" foam base (helps to absorb the sound sound of a heavy base) and then cuts and stacks wood in different directions onto the base. Sometimes she paints them, other times they're left natural. The panels provide "high quality sound diffusion, excellent scattering properties, resulting in a warm, musical character to the dispersed sound". And, the products don't call for additional trees to be logged - she's reusing pieces she finds in scrap yards and out in nature on trails in Canada.
