Bobby Esposito: Acoustics Research

Theater sound design has been around since the Ancient Greeks and has been perfected and made more efficient with modern materials and technological innovations. Movie theaters today almost always use speakers as their sound source and use surround sound systems to immerse the moviegoers in whatever film they are watching. Because of the multiple directions the speakers are placed, an issue that arises is reverberation and interference from separate audio sources. Most movie theaters are encased in a concrete shell to limit the sound from leaving the room and concrete is inherently very reflective of sound. To deter bad reverberation, theaters place padding on the walls, usually in the form of pleated curtains or foam. In a small theater, the walls are closer together and the sound will hit the padding more frequently, deterring the high frequency sounds. However, the bass will appear stronger because the high frequency sounds are reduced. In large theaters, the high frequency sound will stay prominent and because of the larger space, the bass is not as heavily emphasized. Action movies rely on a heavy bass and therefore are better suited for smaller theaters. All this information and more are on this site:  http://lenardaudio.com/education/17_cinema_6.html
