The Reed College Performing
Arts Building by Opsis Architecture was one of the 2014 US Wood Design Award
Winners. The building combines theatre, dance, and music programs all into one
central place for arts. Wood is used throughout the entire construction to
create ‘welcoming and unique spaces’ such as the wood panel curtains or bamboo amphitheatre
steps. As a performing arts building with five performance spaces, the acoustic
design was thoroughly considered. Angled wood panels in the lobby diffuse sound
while other select panels absorb sound. The fir slatted wood ceiling absorbs
sound while oak slats in the studio theatre veil the absorption materials.
