Danielle Lehmann: Looking Out Week 8

The Phu Tho District of Vietnam received an environmentally friendly building in 2008. The bar was built by the Vo Trong Nghia firm and is a compliment to the cafe which it is next to. The bar is not any ordinary type of bar. It is an enclosed space despite the structure itself which was built with bamboo. The firm created an arch system with bamboo by using two primary wrapping systems (in details in pictures below). This system creates the structure of the domed bar which was then covered with grasses and straw which is very insulating. Even so, the structure actually allows natural ventilation. The wind that comes off the lake can make its way through the structure without compromising it. There is also a hole in the top of the building, like an oculius, which lets out the hot air inside the structure. One of the best things about this building though is that "The two buildings [bar and cafe] originated from nature. They now merge in harmony with nature. With time they will return to nature."
