Ponsonby’s Mackelvie Street Shopping Precinct won a Commercial Architecture award in 2013. This shopping centre was design by RTA Studio. It located in Mackelvie St. in Auckland. It grabs the pedestrians' attention with its unique, lacy facade.

Looking Out Week 10 Madhura Kharche

The Valley Performing Arts Center in Southern California's San Fernando Valley has theater spaces that fulfill visual and acoustic requirements of an ideal theater. The interior walls of these theater spaces have concave profiles that allow sound waved to bounce off of them in a way that optimizes the amplification of sound for the audience. The height of the ceiling and the materials in the interior further influence this acoustic quality of the theater.

Floating School on a Nigerian Lagoon

     The school that Adeyemi designed was designed with the thought that much of the architecture in Nigeria is not permanent due to unpredictable rises of water level due to flooding. This half boat, half house prototype will help educate the people in the surrounding area. But the uses can extend farther than just a school, it could be a market, event space, or clinic that can hold 100 adults with no problem. The structure makes use of local materials, namely wooden off-cuts from a local sawmill and locally grown bamboo.

The bridge is shaped like a boat to mimic the city's historical/cultural maritime spirit.

It reminded me of the Metropol Parasol in Seville but of course on a smaller scale. The BANQ Restaurant by Office dA in Boston has a huge curved wooden sculpture placed in the middle of the structure. It’s made with ¾” birch plywood put together like a puzzle piece. The layout of the wood follows the intent of dining areas. In addition, the light assists it in creating “warm wood” spaces that enhance the ambience of the restaurant.

Liz Dolinar: Looking Out Week 10

These are printed chairs by Nendo, featured at this year's Milan Design Week. The chairs are made from a variety of materials, including OSB and hard wood. The wood grain was scanned and printed on the same piece at a different angle. The process of producing these chairs creates a really cool layered effect and a new pattern to the wood surface. This design is interesting because the original material is being preserved and is visible, yet has a completely different look when you look a bit closer.

Vlad Mishin is highlighted in this week's Looking Out. He has designed a conceptual space organizer for very small spaces (around 200 square feet) which divides small apartment spaces while giving extra storage space. The divider is an "undulating" and angular wall with several openings where black metal framework pokes out of the wooden screen. The "wall" hides the kitchen and kitchen storage and divides the rest of the space into the living/public spaces and the bedroom and office/private spaces. The entertainment space can revolve to "be" in the more public or private spaces. The wall essentially is a very simple hiding space which makes the public spaces very simple and elegant while hiding the private spaces and clutter of more personal items.
